NASA's Ingenuity successfully completed its third flight, accelerating to 2 meters per second, covering a distance of 50 meters at an altitude of five meters. The flight lasted 80 seconds. The amount of information gathered by NASA made JPL engineers very happy, who are now sure that propeller spacecraft can be used to explore Mars in the future.
We had prepared for today's flight, but that does not mean it was not amazing. With this flight we demonstrate the critical capabilities that will favor the addition of an aerial dimension to future missions to Mars.
There are only two flights left before NASA pushes Ingenuity to its limits, possibly leading it to disaster, to focus on the main mission of the Perseverance rover. Ingenuity has already proven that flying in an atmosphere as sparse as Mars is possible and any tests from now on will be just to test the ship's limits.
The fourth flight will take place in a few days, while the fifth will move Ingenuity at a distance of 300 meters, with MiMi Aung, project manager of Ingenuity, stating that she will try to catch even 600 meters. Ingenuity is expected to be destroyed during the landing, mainly due to the unknown and uncharted area in which it will operate.
If we have a bad landing, it will be the end of the mission. His life will depend on how well he lands.
